Send an instant message or another type of message
If you have Windows Live Messenger installed on your computer, and you've signed in to Windows Live Mail with a Windows Live ID (The user name and password that you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) , you can send instant messages to your Messenger contacts from within Windows Live Mail. If you and your contact have the necessary hardware, you can also start video conversations and access Windows Live Call to make telephone calls to contacts through your computer.
If you aren't signed in to Messenger when you try to send an instant message or start a call or video conversation, you're prompted to sign in.
If you don't have Messenger installed on your computer, when you try to send an instant message or start a call or video conversation, you're prompted to install it.
To open Messenger when you're signed in to Windows Live Mail, in the folder pane (The left pane in the Windows Live Mail window, containing the folder structure for all the e-mail accounts, newsgroup accounts, or RSS feeds that you've added.
