Supported backup devices
You can use the following devices to back up your files:
- Back up to an external hard disk:
You can use an external hard disk (A removable hard disk that connects to your computer and uses a USB or an IEEE 1394 ("FireWire") connection.) to back up a single computer. Or, you can use it as a central backup device (The backup files are stored on a central device that all computers in a OneCare circle can use.) for all the computers in your OneCare circle (A small network of computers that share the same Windows Live OneCare subscription.) . To use an external hard disk drive as a central backup device, the drive must have a storage capacity of at least 25 gigabytes (GB).
-
Back up to a disc burner:
To use this kind of backup device, you need a disc burner (A disc drive that writes or records information in addition to reading it (such as a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW drive).) and blank writeable (A disc to which data can be copied. Recordable discs (CD-R, DVD-R) allow data to be written only once. Rewriteable discs (CD-RW, DVD-RW) can be erased and used again.) discs.
Windows Live OneCare supports the following writeable discs:
- CD-R
- CD-RW
- DVD-R
- DVD-RW
- DVD+R
- DVD+RW
- DVD+R DL (Double Layer)
-
Back up to a network location:
If you use a network location for backup, OneCare can back up your files automatically during tune-ups. If you share the network location, you can use it as a central backup device for all the computers in your OneCare circle.
- Back up to the following portable devices:
- Memory Stick Pro or Pro Duo
- USB 2.0 flash memory drive
- Secure Digital (SD) Card
- XD-Picture Card
- USB or FireWire portable hard disk drive
- Portable media player with a USB connection
- MultiMedia Card
- Compact Flash Card
Notes
- If you back up to a network location, we recommend that you back up to a location on a secure network. If you back up to a location on an open network, someone may be able to capture your data with a network sniffer program (A program that can capture data as it passes through a network.) . For more information about protecting your network, visit the Microsoft Security At Home website.
- OneCare may not recognize the disc that you're trying to use, or it may report that the disc is corrupted. Usually, this happens because of differences between brands of writeable discs or variations in disc burner technology.
